Police in Rukungiri District have launched a manhunt for unidentified suspect(s) involved in the brutal murder of 63-year-old Mauda Kobusingye, a resident of Kanyanya Cell, Rwentondo Ward in Eastern Division, Rukungiri Municipality.

According to the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the murder occurred during the night of July 8, 2025, at the deceased’s residence. It is alleged that Kobusingye was at home with 14-year-old Roland Akankwasa, a boy living with a mental disability, when an unknown assailant entered the house and grabbed her by the neck. The intruder then ordered the boy to leave the house, which he did, seeking refuge at a neighbor’s home.

When the boy returned the next morning, he found Kobusingye lying lifeless in a pool of blood, having been stabbed with a knife. He raised an alarm, attracting residents who immediately alerted police at Rukungiri Central Police Station.

Police visited and documented the scene, recorded statements from relevant witnesses, and deployed a K9 unit. However, investigations were initially hampered after family members reportedly cleaned the crime scene and the body before the police could conduct a thorough examination.

The body was later taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre III for postmortem as investigations continue.

ASP Maate called on members of the public with any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigations.

“Inquiries are still at hand,” he said.
