Police in Rukungiri District have carried out a successful intelligence-led operation that led to the arrest of 72 suspected criminals accused of terrorizing residents of Rukungiri Municipality.
According to the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the overnight operation, conducted on October 7, 2025, targeted individuals involved in bag snatching, burglary, theft, robbery, and drug abuse.
“Several suspects were found in possession of breaking implements, others were caught smoking opium, while some were found loitering on the streets at odd hours without proper identification,” Maate said.
He revealed that after a screening exercise conducted this morning, 26 suspects were formally charged with offenses including public nuisance, possession and smoking of opium, and possession of breaking implements, and are now pending court action.
Related operations in Kisoro District also led to the arrest of 20 suspects, eight of whom have already appeared before court on similar charges. In Kabale District, police are still pursuing key suspects linked to criminal gangs, with four others already apprehended from Mpigi, Mbarara, and Kabale over the weekend.
ASP Maate assured the public that the operations will continue across the entire Kigezi region until criminal activities are significantly reduced.
