Pentecostal Churches of Rukungiri District on Monday organized a general cleaning event on the streets of Rukungiri Municipality Town to promote cleanliness and show solidarity for the upcoming Rukungiri Harvest Crusade, organized by A Light of the Nation.
The cleaning initiative began at the Rukungiri Municipal Council headquarters, proceeding through Rukungiri District headquarters, Republic Road, Rukungiri Bus/Taxi Park, Rukungiri Central Market, and Karegyesa Road, and concluding at Rukungiri Main Stadium. Participants cleaned and collected garbage along the route.
His Worship Charles Makuru, the Mayor of Rukungiri Municipal Council, flagged off the activity, welcoming the initiative and condemning irresponsible garbage disposal.
Pastor Obed Ndyamuba, the Manager of A Light of the Nation Ministries, which originates from America, highlighted their efforts in schools to preach and encourage young girls to avoid dropping out, drug abuse, and early pregnancies. They have also donated footballs to support sports for skills enhancement and organized this general cleaning to emphasize that public cleanliness is a collective responsibility.
Pastor Elaisha Kakwerere, the Chairperson of the Harvest Crusade organizing team, stated that the general cleaning is part of the preparations for the Crusade, scheduled for July 18-21 at Rukungiri Main Stadium, emphasizing that cleanliness is next to godliness.
Bishop Grace Micheal Okello, an advisor to the Crusade organizing team, assured that similar general cleaning efforts were organized across the Sub Counties under the “Keep Rukungiri Clean” initiative, demonstrating that cleanliness is voluntary work.
Jennifer Kyasimire, a second-hand clothes vendor in Rukungiri Central Market, and James Kadugara, a second-hand clothes dealer along Karegyesa Road, praised the general cleaning, stressing that it enhances the environment for customer convenience.
