A wave of grief has swept through Mubuku Primary School in Mubuku Town Council, Kasese District, following the tragic death of an eight-year-old pupil who drowned in River Mubuku.

The deceased, identified as Magambo Innocent, a Primary One pupil, was swept away by the river’s strong current on the evening of Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at around 7:00 PM while playing near the riverbank with friends.

According to police reports, the river had swollen due to heavy rains in the Rwenzori Mountains, intensifying the flow of water. Innocent’s body was carried approximately 200 meters downstream and was later recovered by officers from Mubuku Police Station, led by OC Station ASP Tukumubona Stephen, with the assistance of local residents. The body was found near the Mubuku Prisons Maize Farm.

The Rwenzori East Police Spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, has expressed deep sorrow over the incident and cautioned the public, particularly parents, to prevent children from playing near water bodies such as River Mubuku, River Nyamwamba, and their tributaries, which continue to pose serious risks to the community.

“Parents and guardians must remain vigilant, especially during the rainy season, to ensure the safety of their children,” SP Tumushime emphasized.

The body of the deceased has been handed over to the family for burial arrangements.
