The Bushenyi District Council has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating condition of the Mbarara–Ishaka road, describing it as a death trap and calling for immediate government action.

During a council session held on Tuesday afternoon, Adinan Tumuhairwe, the councillor representing Kakanju Sub-county, tabled a motion under matters of public importance. He noted that the road’s worsening state has not only endangered lives but has also hampered the region’s business potential.

“The Mbarara–Ishaka road has become extremely dangerous for motorists and pedestrians alike. It is now costing lives and leading to massive business losses,” Tumuhairwe said, adding that the road is a crucial trade route connecting Uganda to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.

In response, the council resolved to convene an emergency joint regional council meeting to draft and present a formal petition to the Government of Uganda. Additionally, plans are underway to mobilize a peaceful demonstration by concerned citizens to demand quick government intervention.

The road in question is vital for tourism and regional connectivity, linking western Uganda to key destinations such as Queen Elizabeth National Park, Mt. Rwenzori, Kitagata Hot Springs, Lake Mburo, and the Karinju and Kasyoha-Kitomi forests.

The council also highlighted some of the most dangerous sections of the road, including the Kitojo–Kaziho stretch, the area near Omukinanasi close to Uganda Technical College Bushenyi, Nyakabirizi Main Stage, and St. Kagwa Trading Centre.

Local leaders hope that their unified voice will prompt urgent repairs and long-term rehabilitation of this essential transport route.
