Rushaka Primary School, nestled in Rushaka Parish of Nyamirama Sub-County, finds itself grappling with significant challenges that hinder the learning environment for its 1010 pupils. Despite being a government school, the school faces a dire shortage of classrooms, forcing many pupils to study under the shelter of trees.
Head Teacher Rwamahe Milton paints a stark picture of the situation, highlighting the struggle the school faces, particularly during the rainy season. “Whenever the rain pours, the pupils congest in one classroom, and even others remain exposed on the Verlander,” he laments. This overcrowding not only hampers effective learning but also poses safety risks to the students.
Moreover, Rushaka Primary School has only two pit latrines, woefully inadequate for the large student population. The situation is especially challenging for female students, who outnumber their male counterparts. Girls often endure long queues for access to these limited facilities, affecting their comfort and dignity.
Kenneth Tumuhamye, the secretary for Social Services, acknowledges the gravity of the situation. He assures the school community that the government is set to grant 100 million shillings to complete a four-classroom block, initiated by the parents. However, the completion of this project remains pending, leaving the school in a state of limbo.
Tumuhamye appeals to the government to prioritize education infrastructure and avoid discouraging parental contributions to school development funds. “We cannot provide adequate facilities and services for all schools without robust government support,” he emphasizes.
The plight of Rushaka Primary School underscores broader challenges faced by educational institutions in rural areas, where inadequate infrastructure and resources hamper efforts to provide quality education.
As stakeholders await concrete action from authorities, the future of hundreds of pupils hangs in the balance, caught between the promise of education and the harsh realities of their learning environment.
