The Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Jacob Oboth-Oboth, has warned politicians against politicizing development projects being implemented by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) in the Kigezi region, saying such projects are a government initiative approved by Cabinet and not individual politicians.
Oboth-Oboth made the remarks on Wednesday while officiating as chief guest at the launch of the Kabale District Tarehe Sita activities, held at Kigezi High School Primary Playground, ahead of the 45th Tarehe Sita celebrations scheduled for 6th February 2026 at the National Teachers College grounds in Kabale.
The UPDF is currently implementing a series of community projects across the six districts of Kabale, Rubanda, Rukiga, Kisoro, Kanungu and Rukungiri as part of activities to mark the national event. These projects include rehabilitation of health and school facilities, construction of roads and bridges, and environmental conservation, among others.
The minister expressed concern that some politicians are misleading the public by claiming to have personally lobbied for the projects in order to gain political advantage. He emphasized that the projects and their budgets are approved by Cabinet, not by individual leaders.
He also commended the UPDF for its professionalism and discipline in defending Uganda’s sovereignty, promoting regional peace and contributing to national development.
The 2026 Tarehe Sita celebrations will be held under the theme:
“Defending the gains of the revolution and honoring the sacrifice of the freedom fighters: A call to national unity, peace and socio-economic transformation.”
