Pupils from 5 government schools in Nyarushanje Subcounty Rukungiri district have today taken part in a Reading Promotion Event aimed at instilling a reading culture in learners and imp improving their reading abilities.

The event attracted over  50 Primary School Pupils from primary five and six, 20 School Stakeholders that include Headteachers, teachers and School Management Committee (SMC) representatives, 20 Parents and 12 Community Based Volunteer Library Coordinators, was  organized by PeerLink Initiative Uganda

PeerLink Initiative Uganda (PELI-U) is an NGO working to contribute to the socio-economic empowerment of children, youth, and women through a community library and empowerment center model that provides access to information, skills development training, educational, cultural, and recreational services.

The Event intended to strengthen stakeholders’ involvement in supporting reading initiatives in schools will take place at Nyarushanje Community Library and Empowerment Center starting at 11:00 a.m.

PeerLink Initiative Uganda (PELI-U) Nyarushanje Community Library and Empowerment Center with support from National Library of Uganda and Book Aid International is implementing Inspiring Readers project in Nyarushanje Subcounty Rukungiri District.

Through this project, 5080 books were distributed to 5 Government Primary Schools of Nyarushanje Subcounty and each School received a bookshelf. 

The books distributed are increasing access to reading materials in schools and promoting literacy. 5 Headteachers and 10 teachers were trained in literacy promotion and Library management.

 The pupils took  part in activities that include School-based Individual reading activities, a school-based spelling competition, a Book review, and an inter-school spelling competition

The Reading Promotion Event was supported by Pace Able Foundation, Book Aid International and National Library.
