Residents of Nyakitabire B Parish in Ruhinda Subcounty, particularly those in Kyaato, Kabasoni, and Ruborooga cells, raise concerns over the water scarcity challenge in the area, left with the option of running into stagnant ponds and rivers.

The longstanding challenge has forced these affected residents to only rely on the option of accessing water for domestic use from ponds, stagnant ditches, and from Njororo and Kabashumba rivers.

Speaking with Boona Radio, Byaruhanga Charles, the NRM Chairperson Nyakitabire B Parish, addressed the longstanding concern which has affected the health of residents over the years, leading to outbreaks of waterborne diseases.

Mr. Charles acknowledged that particularly in cells like Kyaato Cell, Kabasoni Cell, and Ruborooga, residents struggle a lot to access clean water to use in their homes, resulting in running to stagnant sources despite having the Kahengye Water Project and RUDIFA Water Company in the area.

Annah Tibiriho, the Ruborooga Cell LC1 Chairperson, together with Mutabazi Francis, the Kyaato Cell LC1 Chairperson, and Tuesday Twinomugisha Lawrence, the Kabasoni Cell LC1 Chairperson, with great sorrow also confirmed this while speaking with Boona Radio, expressing that they have no clean water sources in Nyakitabire B Parish. Currently, they’re left helpless with no option other than running into stagnant ponds, ditches, and rivers to access water for use at home.

They added that even though they raised their concerns to their upper local leaders such as Hellen Kabajungu, the LC3 Chairperson of the Subcounty, she contributed efforts and brought very few taps to the area; however, they were also damaged later since a big population gathered at these scarce taps, causing damages.

Currently, together with residents, they are left humbled with no words, comfortably waiting for what will happen next without any clean water source. Amidst that, they have even dropped hopes.

In response, the Ruhinda Subcounty LC3 Chairperson Hellen Kabajungu told Boona Radio that the water scarcity challenge in the area is one of the main problems hindering Ruhinda Subcounty and has given them sleepless nights as leaders. However, she gave hope, saying that even yesterday, 29th May 2025, they had a team from National Water and Sanitation discussing and investigating the affected areas and acknowledging the Kahengye Water Project to abolish the challenge.

However, she also said that they have a couple of water project options in case the Kahengye Project fails, such as the Nyakyeera Water Project and Kyomeera water sources. Meanwhile, the lack of underground water sources has contributed towards the scarcity of water in the area since water springs can never be established.

They have very few natural water springs.
