Residents and local leaders of Nyakishenyi Subcounty in Rukungiri District are expressing deep concern over the deteriorating condition of the Kagana-Kisya Bridge, which was washed away by heavy rains. The bridge serves as a vital connection between Kagana Trading Centre and Kisya.

Kyaresire Benia, the Chairperson of LC1 Rushebeya Cell, Murama Parish, Nyakishenyi Subcounty, voiced his frustrations, highlighting that the bridge’s poor state has severely impacted local businesses, particularly those transporting goods to Kagana Trading Centre.

He noted that transport in the area has been adversely affected, making it harder for traders from Kisya to access the nearby trading center. He urged local leaders and the government to take immediate action to address this critical situation.

The Chairperson of LC3 Nyakishenyi Subcounty, Wednesday Twinomujuni, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the bridge’s impact on local farmers and schoolchildren who rely on it to transport their produce to markets. He added that efforts made by residents to patch sections of the bridge and improve “dp burungi bwasi” have been washed away by heavy rains.

Wednesday added that he has spoken to the district authorities, urging them to prioritize the safety and well-being of residents. He asked residents to be patient, assuring them that everything possible is being done to ensure the bridge is repaired.

Speaking to our reporter Julius Bagira, the Rukungiri District Engineer acknowledged the challenge, noting that he has been informed by local leaders. He explained that they cannot work on all bridges at the same time, as no budget was allocated for this particular bridge. However, he said he will write to the Ministry to request that the bridge be considered for urgent repair.
