Residents and local leaders from Nyakishenyi Sub County, Rukungiri District have commenced consultations about how far Uganda National Roads Authority ( UNRA) has gone towards renovating their road before they organize a peaceful demonstration.
The road that measures 25 kilometres crosses Nyakishenyi sub-county from Kisiizi Upper trading center at the border of Rukiga district, through the trading centers of Mabindi – Kamaga – Nyakisoroza – Kyondo – Murama – Kabaranga to Rugyeyo Sub County, Kanungu District.
The Chairperson LC3 Nyakishenyi Sub-county Twinomujuni Wednesday says that the conditions worsened following the recent activity when UNRA expanded the size of the road and hence interfering with culverts and drainage channels.
He added that they recently held a meeting with top leadership including the Ministry of Security Minister Hon Maj General Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, area Member of Parliament Hon Naboth Namanya, and District Chairperson Geoffrey Kyomukama alongside UNRA representatives who promised to renovate the road but since then, nothing has been done.
Wednesday disclosed that consultations are ongoing noting that the road can be renovated before the rainy season since it is impassable and if the response is not received, they are ready to proceed with a peaceful demonstration.
The district councilor representing Nyakishenyi Sub County Brain Baantu Ainebyoona reiterated that he recently consulted the Uganda National Roads Authority ( UNRA) and was promised to renovate the road.
Dickson Matsiko alias Dicky, the Director of Mercy Nursery and Primary School revealed his dissatisfaction with the government noting that pushing vehicles along the road is now becoming normal and the current possible mode of transport is by motorcycle which will also be affected during the rainy season.
Innocent Ninsiima, a timber trader in the area says that they are incurring double transport expenses by first transporting timber to the access road instead of finding them from their timber yard.
When contacted by the Rukungiri Chairperson LCV Geoffrey Kyomukama, promised to consult the technical team.
