Jolly Kyomugasho Mugisha, the Deputy President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for Western Uganda, has passed away. Mugisha died on Monday afternoon at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where she had been admitted in a coma for several weeks.

The news of her passing was announced by NUP party president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, through a statement on social media.

“It is with profound grief and great sadness that I announce the passing of Hon. Jolly Mugisha, the National Unity Platform Deputy President for the Western Region. Mama Jolly has passed on this afternoon from Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital where she had been admitted in a coma for several weeks. Other communication will be made in due course. Mama Jolly is a true Ugandan heroine,” Bobi Wine said.

NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya also expressed deep sorrow, calling it a dark day for the party. “May God receive your gentle soul in His eternal kingdom, Mama Jolly Mugisha! We shall always love you and cherish the great moments we shared with you. Till we meet again,” Rubongoya wrote.

Party spokesman and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi mourned the loss of a leader he described as a mother figure to the party. “Hon. Jolly Mugisha, NUP’s Deputy President in charge of Western Uganda has passed on after being hospitalized for some days. She was not just a leader, but a mother to us. We shall miss her passion and zeal. Rest in peace, Mama Jolly,” Ssenyonyi said.

Mugisha, a trained social worker, joined the NUP in July 2020 and quickly rose to prominence, becoming a key figure in leading the party’s activities in Western Uganda, a region traditionally dominated by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). At the time of her death, she was also the Vice Chair of Uganda’s National Consultative Forum (NCF) for all registered political parties, representing NUP.

Further announcements regarding her funeral and memorial services are expected in the coming days.
