The Minister of State for Local Government, Victoria Busingye Rusoke, has raised concerns about the public’s lack of awareness regarding the funds that the government allocates to local and lower local governments.
While opening a two-day Local Government Regional Budget Consultative Workshop for the 2025/26 financial year, organized by the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development at Lake View Resort Hotel in Mbarara, Hon. Rusoke noted that many local leaders, civil servants, and communities are unaware of the funds provided to local governments.
She cited, for example, funds allocated to health centers for minor rehabilitation and replacements, emphasizing that district hospitals receive UGX 20 million every three months, Health Center IVs receive UGX 80 million, and Health Center IIIs receive UGX 4 million. However, this information is often not communicated to stakeholders.
Hon. Rusoke called on the Ministry of Finance to assist in publishing these details in newspapers so that the public can be informed and track the usage of these funds.
Additionally, she warned school managers who are unlawfully charging fees for games and sports, noting that the government already allocates funds for such activities, and no school should request additional payments without authorization from the government.
