Ntungamo District Electoral Commission has confirmed that 105 candidates successfully registered during the nomination exercise for LC5 chairpersons and LC5 councilors, which concluded on Friday.

Among the confirmed nominees, three are contesting for LC5 chairperson positions, 67 are male LC5 councilors, 35 are female LC5 councilors, and 10 represent special interest groups including workers, youths, and persons with disabilities. These figures were released by the District Returning Officer, Latif Ngonzi, who oversaw the nomination exercise that began on Wednesday, 3rd September, and ended on Friday, 5th September 2025.

The candidates pledged to promote unity, improve service delivery, and drive development in their respective areas. Among those nominated is Kigogo Assuman, the LC5 councilor for Nyamunuka Town Council and current Vice Chairperson of Ntungamo District, seeking a second term. Assuman emphasized his commitment to fostering development among local groups and institutions.

His contender, Ronald Tindyebwa of the new political party PFF, said his mission is to represent the voice of the locals, fight injustice, and promote unity among the people of Nyamunuka.

Denis Savimbi Muhumuza, LC5 councilor for Itojo Sub County, who lost in the NRM primaries, decided to contest as an independent. Savimbi stated that the NRM primaries were not free and fair, and he chose to place his trust in the Electoral Commission.

Meanwhile, Kenneth, who won the NRM primaries in Itojo LC5 councilor race and is the NRM flag bearer, pledged to collaborate with all parties and constituents to bring development to the area.

Other candidates include Caroline Akunda, seeking a second term as LC5 councilor for Rugarama North Sub County in Rushenyi Constituency.

Amon Nabaasa, the NRM flag bearer for Rukoni West, Ruhaama East, criticized the current councilor for failing to attend district council meetings since being elected. Nabaasa said this neglect discouraged him from participating in the NRM primaries. He promised to improve residents’ well-being by providing clean water, better roads, and essential services in his area.

The nomination exercise for LC3 councilors, chairpersons, and mayors is scheduled to commence on Monday, 8th September, and will conclude on Friday, 12th September at the Electoral Commission offices in Ntungamo.
