The National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Vice Chairperson for Western Region, Eng. Asiimwe Jornad Akiki, has commended Boona FM for its continued contribution to sports development through the annual Boona FM Cup.

Eng. Akiki, who is also associated with Kitara Football Club, said the tournament not only promotes sports but also stimulates local economic activity as large crowds gather, creating opportunities for business and trade. He further announced that, in partnership with Jornad Group of Companies, he will support the next edition of the Boona FM Cup with UGX 30 million to enhance talent development.

During the third edition of the tournament, four teams qualified for the semifinals: Ruhinda Subcounty, Nyarushanje Subcounty, Eastern Division, and Buyanja Town Council. Eastern Division defeated Buyanja Town Council, while Ruhinda Subcounty — last year’s champions — retained the title after overcoming Eastern Division in the final.

Rukungiri District Football Association Chairperson, Amos Buhe, also applauded Boona FM for promoting sports in the district. He noted that the tournament helps authorities identify talented players who can be supported to progress in the sport. Buhe expressed concern about the current condition of Rukungiri Main Stadium and called for improved maintenance.

Hon. Mary Paula Turyahikayo, one of the directors of Boona FM, said the Boona FM Cup was introduced to promote talent development by providing a platform where teams from different subcounties compete and outstanding players can be identified and rewarded. She added that the competition also creates business opportunities for people who trade during tournament activities.

According to the organizers, the winning team was scheduled to receive UGX 3 million, the runners-up UGX 1 million, while the third and fourth-placed teams were each set to receive UGX 400,000.
