A section of National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters under the Nyekundire Group in Kanungu District has petitioned the party’s top leadership, raising serious concerns over the conduct of the NRM District Executive Committee (DEC) during the recent general elections.
In a letter dated January 30, 2026, addressed to the NRM National Chairman and copied to key party organs and district authorities, the group accuses the district executive of mobilising support for independent candidates, an action they say contradicts party ideology and weakened NRM’s electoral performance in the district.
The petitioners allege that party resources were allegedly used to undermine official NRM flag bearers, resulting in internal divisions and what they describe as a significant loss of support, particularly in Kanungu District where opposition parties reportedly gained over 20 percent of the vote.
The letter further claims that religious and geographical biases influenced political mobilization, accusing some religious leaders, particularly from the Anglican Church of promoting sectarianism. The group says such actions deepened divisions among party supporters and the wider community.
According to the petition, the conduct of the District Executive Committee not only affected NRM candidates but also demoralized grassroots supporters, raising questions about accountability and future mobilization ahead of upcoming political processes.
The Nyekundire Group also alleges that resources from the NRM Secretariat were misused by district leaders to mobilise against the party itself, a move they warn could further weaken NRM’s standing in Kanungu if not urgently addressed.
In their demands, the group calls for the immediate resignation of the Kanungu District NRM Chairperson and the entire executive committee, alongside a public apology to party members. They also urge religious leaders accused of promoting sectarianism to cease such actions, warning that continued involvement could attract public scrutiny.
Additionally, the petition asks the NRM National Chairman to intervene directly in Kanungu District affairs to restore unity, discipline, and the party’s image at the grassroots.
The petition is signed by Mzee Donati Kananura, the group chairperson, and Kateshumbwa Lydia, the group coordinator.
By press time, NRM district and national leaders had not yet issued an official response to the allegations.
