Professor Pamela Mbabazi, Chairperson of the National Planning Authority, voiced her concerns regarding the escalating poverty rates in the Kigezi sub-region. During the launch of Hass Avocado cultivation in Rukiga district, hosted by Member of Parliament Rolland Ndyomugyenyi Bish, Professor Mbabazi emphasized the pressing need to enhance household incomes and spur economic growth.

Despite possessing abundant resources, the Kigezi Sub-Region remains classified as one of Uganda’s most impoverished areas. Professor Mbabazi highlighted the untapped potential of the region and urged residents to seize the opportunity presented by Hass avocado farming as a means to alleviate poverty and foster economic empowerment.

Assuring support in accessing resources and expertise, such as agricultural training and market connections, Professor Mbabazi called for collaboration among government entities, private sector stakeholders, and local communities to cultivate a thriving avocado industry in Rukiga District.

Addressing residents and local leaders, Rukiga County MP Hon. Rolland Ndyomugyenyi Bish underscored the economic benefits of embracing this lucrative crop, noting its high demand both domestically and internationally. He urged residents to organize themselves and prepare their land in anticipation of receiving seedlings by July.

According to Rukiga District Deputy Resident Commissioner Zaddok Kamusiime, the initiative not only offers financial rewards but also aligns with broader sustainability goals, including soil conservation and biodiversity preservation. Kamusiime emphasized the importance of such initiatives in complementing government-led poverty reduction endeavors like the Parish Development Model (PDM), reflecting Rukiga’s dedication to comprehensive development and environmental conservation.
