Members of the North Kigezi diocese synod are today scheduled to elect a 15-member nomination committee that will in turn pick names of candidates from which the 6th Bishop of the diocese will be chosen by the house of Bishops
According to a document detailing the agenda of today’s 20th synod meeting that was accessed by our reporter, The diocesan synod will also elect the head of Laity who will replace canon canon Sabiti Mahirane, head of clergy and a diocesan tribunal.
The special synod sitting will also adopt the recently approved diocesan constitution and Governance manual
The diocesan constitution was recently approved by the provincial standing committee of the church of Uganda sitting at Lweza in Mukono district
The election of the nomination committee is one of the final steps towards the election of the substantive Bishop of North Kigezi diocese which has been under care Taker Bishop Patrick Tugume Tusingwiire, since the passing on of Rt Rev Benon Magezi who succumbed to covid in June 2021
A recently released provincial roadmap says the 6th Bishop of North Kigezi diocese should be installed and consecrated by 28th Feb 2023.
The synod meeting will also confirm the appointment of the new diocesan Chancellor Ben Maguru who replaces counsel Giggs Baryajunwa.
The new diocesan chancellor will be deputised by counsel Isaac Atukunda from Kyatoko parish.
By 23 Nov 2022, the diocesan nomination committee should have sent the names of nominated candidates to the province for the house of bishops, to chose the Bishop.
By 1st Dec 2022, the house of bishops should have verified the candidates and elected the bishop, so that the diocese prepares to consecrate the new bishop on 28 Feb 2023
