Farmers in Eastern Ward, Bikurungu Town Council, Rukungiri District are criticizing the government for neglecting the construction of Kanshekye Bridge, which has blocked access to goods and services in the area.

Kanshekye Bridge is located at the boundary of Bikurungu Town Council in Eastern Ward and Ruhinda Sub County in Nyarwimuka Parish, and its poor state has paralyzed business and education activities that rely on Bikurungu Town Council.

Glorius Komugisha, a resident of Nyabukumba Cell in Nyarwimuka Parish, Ruhinda Sub County, voiced concern over the risk to lives of students and patients seeking services from Bikurungu Town Council.

Charles Ruterabo, a resident of Kanshekye 2 Village, Eastern Ward, Bikurungu Town Council, emphasized the long-standing demand for the bridge since his youth and criticized the government for stalling agriculture, which is the main source of income and revenue in the area.

Robert Rubona, a resident of Nyabukumba Cell, Nyarwimuka Parish, Ruhinda Sub County, expressed frustration over the lack of a reliable transport network, saying lives are put at risk as people attempt to cross water at the bridge, which often becomes impassable during the rainy season.

Fred Kamusiime, a resident of Kanshekye 2 Cell, Eastern Ward, shared the challenge of students failing to cross the bridge during the rainy season, coupled with unfulfilled promises from leaders.

Lion Sunday George Rwakinwa, a politician in the area, reiterated that agriculture—the backbone of the local economy—has been stalled due to the lack of a transport network, forcing farmers to trek long and costly routes to access markets.

Wilber Nayebare, the Town Clerk of Bikurungu Town Council, clarified that the Council has already petitioned the District, since the cost of the bridge is beyond the Town Council’s budget, attributing the responsibility to the Central Government.
