Thousands of believers from all walks of life today thronged Ndama Catholic Parish grounds for a thanksgiving Mass in honor of Rev. Fr. Stephen Niwandinda, the first priest ever to be ordained from Ndama Parish. Fr. Niwandinda was ordained on August 23, 2025, at Rushoroza Cathedral.

Born on June 8, 1996, to Mr. Agapitus Kyarikunda and Mrs. Jane Tuhireirwe, Fr. Niwandinda was among the four priests who received the Sacrament of Holy Orders at Rushoroza. He attended Kebisoni Parents Primary School, pursued both O’ and A’ Level studies at St. Charles Lwanga Seminary Nyakibale, later joined Katigondo Major Seminary for Philosophy, and finally studied Theology at Kinyamasika National Seminary.

According to Raymond Rukundo, the head of laity at Ndama Parish, the parish had never had a priest of its own until now. He hailed Fr. Niwandinda for making history and assured that the parish is ready to support anyone who feels called to the priesthood.

In his homily, Rev. Fr. Benect Mubangizi reminded priests of their responsibilities, which include celebrating Mass, administering sacraments, offering pastoral care, praying for the sick, and burying the dead, among others. He urged priests to always pray for the gift of patience, stressing that the vocation is demanding. He further encouraged them to set healthy boundaries to avoid temptations, to support development in their parishes, and to work closely with Christians. Fr. Mubangizi also challenged the faithful to continuously pray for priests, respect them, and support them in their ministry.

Fr. Stephen was ordained alongside three other priests: Rev. Fr. Frank Atuzarirwe from Kitanga Parish, Rev. Fr. Mark Ahaisibwe from Nyarushanje Parish, and Rev. Fr. Onesmus Ahawe from Muchahi Parish in Rubanda.

Taking his vow, Fr. Stephen promised to faithfully serve in his priestly duties and implored Christians to keep him in their prayers. He thanked God for the gift of priesthood, noting that he is ready to serve passionately since he believes he has been sent by God.

During the same Mass, Fr. Stephen administered his first Sacrament of Holy Matrimony to Byamazima Clement and Nahabwe Docus, making them the first couple to wed under his priesthood.

The function was graced by several dignitaries including Rubabo County MP Naboth Namanya, Counsel Emmanuel Ndakwenda representing the NRM flag bearer for Rukungiri Woman MP, priests from various parts of Kabale Diocese, politicians, and many Christians.
