Residents of Izinga 1 in Bunono Parish, Nyarushanje Sub County, Rukungiri District, are living in fear due to a bird that poses a threat to their animals. For almost three weeks, this bird, known as “Eshambu,” has been attacking their livestock, including hens, goats, pigs, ducks, and sheep.

The bird, described as eagle-like but larger in size, inflicts harm on the animals by hitting them and sucking their blood. The incidents are concentrated around Ihunga Hill, where there are planted trees.

Doreen Kembabazi, a resident of Izinga 1, expressed concern about the bird’s dangerous behavior. She described it as a formidable creature that not only sucks the blood of animals but also removes internal organs. Kembabazi emphasized the fear in the community, suggesting that the bird’s power could potentially harm their children.

Mr. Jeffrey, the Chairperson of LC1 in Kizinga Cell, acknowledged the seriousness of the situation. While initially unaware of the bird’s identity, the community eventually realized the threat posed by this bird to their livestock. Mr. Jeffrey reported the matter to LC3 after learning about the bird.

In an interview with our reporter, Mr. Michael Musiime, the Chairperson of LC3 Nyarushanje Sub County, confirmed his awareness of the issue. He mentioned that LC1 had reported the bird attacks, and he is actively exploring solutions to address the problem.

Acknowledging the bird’s ability to fly, Mr. Musiime emphasized the need for community cooperation to trap the bird and mitigate the threat it poses to the residents and their livestock.

Do not kill, rather trap and help UWA to reach out to that bird.

Can this bird be trapped? Where has it originated? It could be having some offsprings which poses continuous danger. UWA can be of help.

UWA in partnership with the Ugandan birders, biologist’s and community members should help the community because if the bird sucks blood from animals then that means it’s deadly to human beings and therefore the community members should let the public know of which time frame or period of the day it can be traced and still be taken to the lab first for tests on sucking blood from those animals that are consumed by people so as prevent loss of our colleagues that may take the meat of those sucked animals before checked whether the bird is poisonous to human being.”life isn’t spare part that it can be replaced ” and prevention is better than cure” .thanks for the opinion.

Anticident publicity is vital to the communities

Am a resident of this affected area, I heard about the story and was very dubious about it’s authenticity.

This is a Job of the UWA and the reason why this body exists. I see it very suicidal to commit the residents to do the needful yet there are laws that prohibit the elimination of such creatures.
RDC’s and other top leaders should swing into action by alerting the relevant authorities to curb down the problem. Otherwise wise this should not be taken as a non serious issue.
