Residents of Izinga 1 in Bunono Parish, Nyarushanje Sub County, Rukungiri District, are living in fear due to a bird that poses a threat to their animals. For almost three weeks, this bird, known as “Eshambu,” has been attacking their livestock, including hens, goats, pigs, ducks, and sheep.
The bird, described as eagle-like but larger in size, inflicts harm on the animals by hitting them and sucking their blood. The incidents are concentrated around Ihunga Hill, where there are planted trees.
Doreen Kembabazi, a resident of Izinga 1, expressed concern about the bird’s dangerous behavior. She described it as a formidable creature that not only sucks the blood of animals but also removes internal organs. Kembabazi emphasized the fear in the community, suggesting that the bird’s power could potentially harm their children.
Mr. Jeffrey, the Chairperson of LC1 in Kizinga Cell, acknowledged the seriousness of the situation. While initially unaware of the bird’s identity, the community eventually realized the threat posed by this bird to their livestock. Mr. Jeffrey reported the matter to LC3 after learning about the bird.
In an interview with our reporter, Mr. Michael Musiime, the Chairperson of LC3 Nyarushanje Sub County, confirmed his awareness of the issue. He mentioned that LC1 had reported the bird attacks, and he is actively exploring solutions to address the problem.
Acknowledging the bird’s ability to fly, Mr. Musiime emphasized the need for community cooperation to trap the bird and mitigate the threat it poses to the residents and their livestock.
