President Yoweri Museveni has challenged people in Kigezi to embrace the government’s poverty-eradicating programs if they are to get rid of poverty and support the government’s commitment to end subsistence farming, where many Ugandans work only for the stomach.
This was part of his message read by Rt. Hon. Robina Nabbanja at Rukungiri Main Stadium during the consecration of Bishop Onesmus Ngoboka Byengoma, the Kigezi regional overseer of the National Fellowship of Born Again Churches, who was elected in May 2023.
President Museveni said that 38% of Ugandans are still engaged in subsistence farming, which he said is dangerous, imploring Ugandans to embrace these programs since they are all aimed at enhancing household income.
He explained four sectors where wealth and jobs can be created, including commercial agriculture, industries, services, and ICT.
He implored leaders to help people by encouraging them to go for commercial agriculture and also engage in other profitable ventures that increase their household income so as to enter the money economy.
Additionally, President Museveni hailed Bishop Ngoboka for his selfless service, ensuring that God’s work is well done in Kigezi.
Dr. Moses Odongo, the Archbishop at the National Fellowship of Born Again Pentecostal Churches, highlighted roles in the region such as spreading the word of God, comforting the brokenhearted, and encouraging believers to work to get rid of poverty.
The function also observed the confirmation of all leaders who were chosen to work with Bishop Ngoboka.
According to Bishop Ngoboka, his team of leaders consists of 500 sub-county leaders, 136 district leaders, 30 provincial leaders, and 15 regional leaders.
He vowed to work with this team to ensure God’s work is well done.
The function was attended by all regional bishops under the NAFBAPC, and other government figures including Minister for Security Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi, Rukungiri Municipality legislator Elisa Rutahigwa, Rukungiri Woman MP Natukunda Medius, and the Rukungiri District Chairperson Geoffrey Kyomukama.
