Residents of Nyakagyeme Subcounty in Rukungiri District have raised serious concerns about the deteriorating state of the Aharyaapa–Kahoko–Kasheegu road, which they say has hindered economic activities and contributed to the area’s underdevelopment.
The road, which connects several communities within Nyakagyeme Subcounty, is supposed to be maintained by the subcounty authorities. However, delays and lack of timely intervention have left the road in a stagnant and impassable condition, affecting transportation and local trade.
Speaking to Boona Radio, Ahimbisibwe Vastine Nyinamayangi, a resident of Kinyanahwa Cell in Kinyanahwa New Parish, expressed deep concern about the road’s poor condition. She noted that its state has significantly disrupted economic activities and transportation.
“We are even charged high transport fares due to the poor condition of this road, leading to unexpected expenses in our daily budgets,” she said.
Vastine added that the road is full of potholes, valleys, and rapids, making vehicle movement difficult and increasing mechanical breakdowns. She called on the government to respond urgently, asserting that residents of the area deserve services as Ugandan taxpayers.
Some local leaders, led by Bernard Binoburamu, the LC2 Chairperson of Kishanda, and Mr. Barughare Johnson, the Kahoko Parish Councillor, also expressed concern about the road. They confirmed its poor state has greatly hindered economic progress in the area. However, they shared with Boona Radio that there is hope.
Binoburamu stated that he received communication from LC3 Chairperson Godson Mubangizi confirming that work on the road is scheduled to begin on May 25th this year. He added that there will be a subcounty meeting tomorrow to address key concerns raised by residents.
Felix Tumuramye Omuzinga, the Nyakagyeme LC5 Councillor, also weighed in during his discussion with Boona Radio. He acknowledged the road is in a very poor condition and confirmed that though grading work has been attempted, heavy rains and floods have worsened the situation.
He added that the road requires extensive work and significant funding, which is beyond the current capacity of the subcounty. For that reason, the road has been forwarded to the district local government for further action.
Tumuramye gave residents hope, saying the road has been included in the work plan for the next financial year starting in July, and asked the community to be patient as their concerns are being addressed.Residents of Nyakagyeme Subcounty Raise Concerns Over Poor Aharyaapa–Kahoko–Kasheegu Road
