President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has launched the rollout of internet connectivity across Kanungu District, marking a major milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to improve digital access and strengthen service delivery.
The launch took place at Rwere Playgrounds in Kirima Sub-county during the President’s campaign rally, where he officially announced the extension of the national fibre network into the district. This development follows the ongoing project that began in Ntungamo and Rukungiri before reaching Kanungu.
President Museveni urged residents to embrace and productively use the internet, emphasizing that technology plays a central role in his manifesto pillar of creating wealth through work.
“The internet is not for leisure alone. Use it to create wealth and support your household incomes,” he told the gathering, adding that digital connectivity is a key driver of socio-economic transformation.
The Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, highlighted that the project, implemented by the National Information Technology Authority – Uganda (NITA-U), will provide public Wi-Fi hotspots to ensure that communities can easily access government digital services.
NITA-U Executive Director Hatwib Mugasa revealed that Phase Five of the national backbone infrastructure expansion in Kanungu is still ongoing. He noted that the district is set to be one of the biggest beneficiaries due to its natural endowments such as tourism attractions, education centers, and growing business activity.
Mugasa encouraged residents to make full use of the new connectivity to boost innovation, business growth, access to information, and overall improvement in livelihoods.
The extension of the national fibre network to Kanungu is expected to open up more opportunities for e-governance, digital learning, online marketing, and improved communication services across the district.
