Leticia Tumuheise, a resident of Kitebwe village in Kahoko parish, Nyakyishenyi sub-county, is currently in need of assistance after heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong winds and hailstorms, destroyed her house while she and her five children were sleeping. Forced to seek refuge in their kitchen out of fear for their safety, Leticia’s husband, a casual worker in Kampala, has been unable to provide any assistance. She is now reaching out to well-wishers for help in rebuilding adequate shelter for her family.
Narasi Magulu, another resident of the parish, recognized the urgent need to support Leticia’s family and contacted the area’s Member of Parliament, Honorable Naboth Namanya, for assistance. Magulu urged residents in hilly areas of Nyakyishenyi Sub County to prioritize environmental conservation by planting trees and adopting modern farming practices like terracing to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall and reduce the speed of running water in the area.
Honorable Naboth Namanya, the legislator for Rubobo County, visited the displaced family and pledged to mobilize support from residents to help them rebuild their homes while awaiting government intervention. He also highlighted the plight of five other families in Nyakaina Buyanja Sub County whose homes were recently destroyed by floods.
Emphasizing the importance of early registration with the district disaster management committee, Honorable Namanya stated that it facilitates swift intervention during such calamities. He also noted the challenges faced in lobbying for relief from the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Disaster and Preparedness without accurate reporting from the district disaster committee. As such, he urged residents to engage with the committee to ensure an effective response to disasters and emphasized the allocation of funds by parliament to the Ministry of Disaster and Preparedness for addressing such emergencies.
