The recent fire that devastated a portion of the renowned Kabagarame weekly pork market has sparked significant discussion in the Parliament of Uganda, with Bushenyi district Woman MP Annet Katusiime Mugisha leading the charge for government action. During her address to the house, Mugisha emphasized that the situation at Kabagarame is of national importance and called for urgent government support to reconstruct the market.

This is not the first instance the Kabagarame market has been a topic of parliamentary discussion. In 2019, the late MP Gordon Arinda Cowboy raised concerns over a private developer’s court case that threatened the market’s future. This led to protests from local citizens and leaders who rallied to protect the market’s interests.

In her presentation, Mugisha highlighted the critical role of Kabagarame in supporting the local piggery industry, which has been actively promoted by the government. “The Kabagarame pork market has provided a vital outlet for the thriving piggery business in the area, with 600 pigs slaughtered each month,” she stated. “It supports the livelihoods of many and attracts visitors from across the country.”

Mugisha outlined several key requests directed towards the office of the Prime Minister, including enhanced security measures to prevent future fire outbreaks. “We ask the government to provide funds for fencing the market to regulate access at night, install solar lights, establish a police post for security, and install CCTV cameras for surveillance,” she urged.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, echoed Mugisha’s sentiments, highlighting the market’s significance as a revenue source for the government and a vital economic lifeline for many local residents. “This market goes beyond pork; it is essential for many widows and families in the area. It has a considerable impact on the local economy,” Tayebwa noted, confirming his status as a frequent patron of the market.

Minister of Local Governments, Raphael Magezi, also voiced his support, acknowledging the government’s responsibility to protect the market. “We are sorry that this is the second time the market has faced destruction. We will send a team to assess what can be done to safeguard it,” he assured Parliament.

The Kabagarame weekly pork market is a bustling hub every Saturday, drawing thousands of visitors eager to indulge in its famous pork delicacies. The recent fire has not only affected local vendors but has also raised concerns about the future of a market that has become an integral part of the community’s economy and culture. With parliamentary support growing for reconstruction efforts, there is hope for a brighter future for Kabagarame and its stakeholders.
