Tragedy struck Murama village in Kiganda Parish, Nyakishenyi Sub County, Rukungiri District on the morning of January 27, 2024, as the community grappled with the heartbreaking discovery of two lifeless bodies.
Tugabirwe Annet and her child, Ainembabazi Shanitta, met a tragic end on Friday night, succumbing to the treacherous waters of River Birara after a relentless downpour.
Yeremiya Kakyebonaho, an eyewitness, recounted the harrowing incident, revealing that the bodies of the deceased were found in the river on Saturday morning. The somber task of retrieval was undertaken, and the mother and child were laid to rest in the wake of the devastating event.
The shocking occurrence has sent shock waves through the community, prompting residents to appeal to the government for the construction of a bridge at the perilous crossing point to avert such tragedies in the future. The plea arises from the urgent need to enhance safety measures and prevent similar incidents that may claim more lives.
As of the time of reporting, the Police had not issued an official statement on the matter, leaving the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident yet to be fully elucidated. Nyakishenyi Sub county Chairman Wednesday Twinomujuni expressed his sorrow over the unfortunate event, vowing to engage with district authorities to address the pressing need for preventative measures.
He acknowledged the urgency of the situation and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to minimize the risk of future tragedies in the community.
