The Kanungu territorial police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Joshua Turyasingura, a 30-year-old resident of Rwenyerere cell, Bihomborwa ward, Kihihi town council, Kanungu district. He was lynched by a mob on 05/01/2024 at Rutendere central cell/Parish, Kayonza sub-county, Kanungu District, around 15:30 hrs.

The incident is believed to be connected to an alleged crime committed by the deceased on 04/01/2024. Joshua Turyasingura is accused of defiling and subsequently murdering a 13-year-old girl from Rukara cell, Kihembe sub-county, in Kanungu district. This case had been formally reported and registered under Kihihi CRB.15/2024. It is reported that he assaulted the victim with a log, causing fatal head injuries, and then concealed the body in a banana plantation.

Following the murder, Joshua fled to his father’s home at Bwaswa cell, Buhoma town council, in Kanungu District. However, an enraged mob apprehended him and carried out the lynching at Rutendere central cell before the arrival of the police. The law enforcement officers were notified and rushed to the scene, but unfortunately, they arrived too late to prevent the mob justice.

The police conducted a thorough examination of the crime scene, documented the evidence, and subsequently transported the deceased’s body to Kihihi Health Center 4 for a postmortem examination. The investigations into the incident have now commenced as the authorities seek to unravel the circumstances surrounding the events leading to Joshua Turyasingura’s death.
