Police in Kabale are investigating a case of mob justice in which a man identified only as Spancer was killed, while another, Gilbert Ainebyona, 28, sustained injuries after being assaulted by a group of residents.
The incident occurred at around 1:30am on January 10, 2026, in Karugashe Cell, Butobere Ward, Central Division, Kabale Municipality.
According to preliminary police findings, the two men were allegedly caught stealing from two neighbouring businesses — a bar owned by Kashengye Emmanuel and a salon belonging to Twinomujuni Anthony, also known as Boy. Local residents responded to the alarm and reportedly beat both suspects, resulting in the death of Spancer and serious injuries to Ainebyona.
Police say the scene was visited and documented, statements were recorded from witnesses, and Ainebyona was rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. The body of the deceased was taken to the same hospital’s mortuary for postmortem examination.
Three suspects — Twinomujuni Anthony, Kashengye Emmanuel and Muhozi Mathew, alias Kahorera — have been arrested to assist police with investigations.
The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, condemned mob justice and confirmed that inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
