In a tragic turn of events in Kazindira Parish, Bugangari subcounty, Rukungiri district, one individual identified as Kidi met a fatal end at the hands of a mob on Thursday evening after being apprehended for alleged coffee theft.

The incident unfolded when locals, fed up with ongoing thefts in the area, took matters into their own hands, resulting in a deadly outcome.

According to eyewitnesses, Kidi was caught red-handed in the act of stealing coffee, a vital livelihood source for many in the community. Frustrated by the continuous thefts plaguing their area, a group of villagers banded together to confront the alleged perpetrator.

Upon receiving notification, police from the Rukungiri Central Police station swiftly responded to the scene. However, they arrived too late to prevent the tragic outcome.

Kidi’s lifeless body was recovered and transported to Rwakabengo Health Center 3 mortuary, pending further investigation.

Additionally, two other individuals believed to have been involved in the incident were rescued by police from the mob’s wrath. Both are currently receiving medical treatment at the same health facility and are expected to be interrogated as part of the ongoing investigation.

This harrowing incident sheds light on the complexities surrounding issues of theft and community justice in rural areas. While theft undoubtedly poses a significant challenge to local livelihoods, the use of violence and mob justice only serves to perpetuate a cycle of fear and unrest.

Police have assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted to bring those responsible for Kidi’s death to justice.
