The District Council of Mitooma District has approved a resolution to create a new administrative unit to be named Bitereko, in a move aimed at improving service delivery and bringing governance closer to the people.

During a council session held on Wednesday 30th April 2026, councilors overwhelmingly supported the proposal to carve the new district out of the existing Mitooma boundaries, citing persistent challenges such as long travel distances to access key services, rapid population growth, and the need for more targeted development planning.

Mitooma District, which borders Bushenyi District, Rubirizi District, and Ntungamo District, has faced increasing pressure on its resources, prompting leaders to consider administrative restructuring as a practical solution.

The resolution will now be submitted to the Ministry of Local Government for review before being forwarded to Parliament for final approval. If endorsed, Bitereko would become one of Uganda’s newest districts, in line with ongoing decentralization efforts across the country.

Local leaders believe the creation of the new district will significantly enhance access to essential services, particularly in health, education, and agricultural extension, while also easing the administrative burden on Mitooma.
