Ntungamo District has awarded Glodina General Supplies Ltd a contract to renovate the district’s ideal and old buildings at the district grounds. The project includes the construction of a modern main gate at the District Council, renovation of the production unit—which will involve installing a new roof, ceiling, and floor extension—purchasing new furniture, and leveling the compound at these offices.
The contract also covers renovation of the Foundation Stone site and buildings that were once used as prison wards. Furthermore, the contractor will build six improved latrines, a septic tank, and a 10,000-litre water supply unit.
District Engineer Charles Kusemererwa acknowledged that the contract will also involve installation of Internet (Wi-Fi), CCTV cameras, and electricity within the premises. Additionally, the project includes fitting modern window and door frames and beautifying the compound. He emphasized the importance of proper supervision to ensure that the buildings last for generations.
David Byaruhanga, the Ntungamo District Planner, explained that the renovation aims to improve the image of these units and convert older structures, such as those built over 30 years ago and once used as prisons, into productive spaces for other government departments. He noted that the contract is scheduled to last five months.
Kiza Fedelis, the Chief Administrative Officer of Ntungamo District, revealed that most of the projects planned for this financial year are near completion, a factor that has ranked the district among the best in proper utilization of government funds. He explained that the money for this project comes from the Central Government’s District Discretionary Equalization Grant, which is provided to districts that use funds efficiently.
Kiza Fedelis further noted that once the former prison buildings are renovated, they can be leased to companies as office spaces, helping to generate revenue for the district.
Anthony Katizi, the Site Engineer for Glodina General Supplies Ltd, pledged to adhere to the quality standards outlined in the Bills of Quantities (BOQs). He further noted that the project is expected to be completed in 3.5 months, ahead of the five months allocated, due to the company’s large task force capable of delivering quality work within the required timeframe.
Ntungamo District Resident District Commissioner, Mrs. Miriam Mugisha Kagiga, urged the contractor to strictly follow the quality standards in the BOQs to ensure that the buildings last for generations rather than using substandard materials or ratios. She promised to conduct proper supervision alongside DEC members, the CAO, and the District Engineer to ensure the work aligns with the required specifications.
