James Turyahikayo Habineza has officially withdrawn from the Kafunjo-Mirama Town Council Mayorship race, just days before the town council and sub-county elections scheduled for 4th February 2026.

Habineza, an independent candidate and incumbent mayor for the past 10 years, made the decision following his loss in the NRM primaries to Ismail Mutabazi. He had opted to contest as an independent citing alleged irregularities, bribery, and unfair practices during the party primaries.

A veteran of the NRM, Habineza joined the party in 1983, served as NRM chairperson for Kafunjo-Mirama TC for 20 years, and became mayor in 2015. In his withdrawal letter to Ntungamo Electoral Commission Returning Officer Charles Wafula dated 27th January 2026, Habineza stated that his decision aims to foster harmony and unity in the town council, consolidating support for the NRM party. Copies of his withdrawal were also submitted to the RDC office, NRM offices, DEC members, and NRM district chairperson Maama Janet.

RDC Ntungamo district, Miriam Mugisha Kagiga, expressed gratitude for Habineza’s decision, noting that it would reduce potential conflicts and insecurity during the elections and strengthen party unity. She encouraged Habineza to work together with his supporters and colleagues to enhance service delivery in their communities.

With Habineza out of the race, Ismail Mutabazi remains the sole candidate for the NRM flag in the Kafunjo-Mirama Mayorship contest.
