The Minister for Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, on Saturday made it clear that the suspension of World Bank support to Uganda will not intimidate the government, as long as the nation remains steadfast in opposing unacceptable behaviors.
The World Bank recently halted future funding for projects in Uganda, citing concerns over human rights violations stemming from the enactment of the anti-homosexuality law. In a statement, the Bank emphasized that funding would remain frozen until Ugandan authorities establish sufficient policies to protect marginalized groups, including the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other LGBTQ+ communities.
In May, President Yoweri Museveni signed the Anti-Homosexuality Act into law, imposing severe penalties, including the possibility of a death sentence for “aggravated homosexuality.” This legislation garnered strong criticism from human rights organizations and Western countries, such as the United States, which even threatened sanctions.
Addressing the audience as the chief guest during the Ordination ceremony of 16 deacons to the priesthood and 3 seminarians into deaconhood at the Kabale diocesan headquarters in Rushoroza, Baryomunsi asserted that the World Bank’s decision would not waver their commitment to defending national norms and practices.
