The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal, and Fisheries in partnership with the World Bank yesterday launched a micro-scale irrigation project in Kanungu District to help farmers increase food production at any time irrespective of the season
Over 400 farmers in different sub-counties across the district will benefit from this project.
Peruth Nimusiima from the Ministry of Agriculture said they are implementing this project to ensure that small scale farmers also access irrigation equipment at a low cost.
She revealed that the government will support eligible farmers with 75% of the total cost of the irrigation equipment for solar power schemes and 25% for petrol-powered schemes with support from the World Bank.
This is one of the mitigation measures to curb climate change.
Tweheyo Betega the Kanungu district Chief Administrative Officer revealed that the funds to implement this project are available and is optimistic that Kanungu being atypically agricultural district will greatly benefit.
Eng. Sam Kajojo Kanungu District Chairperson commended the government for introducing such projects and promised to create awareness for the benefit of the population.
He added that more efforts should be put in the project because as the district they have other two irrigation schemes that are nonfunctional which includes Kameme and Matanda irrigation schemes hence imploring the technical team to ensure good designs are made so that the irrigation schemes serve the intended purpose.
Mwesigye Ambrose RDC Kanungu district, said that the project comes at a great time when the Country is facing hostile weather challenges due to environmental degradation.
He asked the production department to sensitive farmers at the Parish level on how they can benefit from the project.
