AMOS K

A growing number of men in Ntungamo District are raising alarm over increasing cases of domestic violence, with many reporting harassment and physical abuse at the hands of their wives.

Several men have come forward with disturbing accounts of how they are suffering in silence. Some allege that their wives have become increasingly violent, with incidents of physical assault, verbal abuse, and emotional torture becoming more common. In extreme cases, victims have abandoned their homes or tragically taken their own lives.

Kweyunga Aggrey, a resident of Kakiri in Nyamunuka Town Council, shared that his wife, a habitual drunkard, often returns home late at night or in the early morning hours. He added that anytime he attempts to raise concerns, his wife responds aggressively and sometimes involves her mother to confront him, leaving him feeling helpless and unsafe in his own home.

Another resident, Robert Rwamunono from Buhanama, disclosed that he is frequently beaten by his wife. Despite reporting the matter to local authorities, he claims responses are often delayed or lacking altogether. He urged responsible offices to urgently intervene and offer protection to male victims of domestic abuse.

Local leaders acknowledge the rising trend. Apophia Tayebwa Bridget, a woman councillor representing Buhanama Ward, noted that many men are being harassed but are afraid to speak out due to fear of embarrassment or societal ridicule. She condemned such acts of violence and encouraged men to report abuse before it escalates.

Ntungamo Resident District Commissioner, Isiah Kanyamahane, advised women not to misuse their strength to mistreat their partners. He also urged men who feel overpowered to avoid engaging in fights and seek peaceful ways of resolving domestic disputes.

As the district grapples with shifting dynamics in domestic relations, there is a growing call for gender-balanced approaches to handling domestic violence, where both men and women can access protection and support without stigma.
