Dr. Amanyire Moses, the Mbarara City Veterinary Officer, has urged dog owners to understand that their pets are meant to provide home security, not to roam freely and pose risks to others.
His appeal comes in response to the rising number of stray dogs due to the negligence of individuals who keep dogs as part of the family culture without proper control and management.
Dr. Amanyire emphasized that dog owners should take full responsibility for their pets rather than leaving the duty to hired workers.
He also mentioned that Mbarara City recently received thirty thousand doses of rabies vaccine, but only 2,700 dogs have been vaccinated so far, leaving many dogs unregistered.
He highlighted that the Nyakayojo area has the highest number of dogs, yet residents have not reached out to veterinary staff for vaccination assistance. Dr. Amanyire called on local council leaders to help report all unvaccinated dogs and cats.
