Mbarara District authorities have formally sought advice from the solicitor general regarding the process of claiming a sum of 30 million Ugandan Shillings from the American Tower Corporation (ATC). Didas Tabaro Tumwesigye, a representative of the District, disclosed that demand notices for the outstanding amount have been issued to ATC, representing the dues owed by the corporation as a tenant.

The communication mast, established under the auspices of AMPROC, stands on land owned by Mbarara District at Bonastore, opposite Kakyeka Stadium in Mbarara city. Concerns raised by residents about potential health hazards associated with the mast have prompted the District to take action.

It is noteworthy that the District entered into a tenancy agreement with AMPROC, which is owned by Robert Mwesigwa Rukari, the legislator for Mbarara City North. This agreement was reached after previous attempts by District councils to sublease the land to AMPROC faced obstacles.

Tabaro alleges that ATC proceeded with the construction of the mast on the District’s land without obtaining proper consent. Consequently, the District Executive Committee has communicated with the solicitor general, seeking further guidance on the matter.
