Mbarara District Local Government has initiated the construction of a 13.03 km road, stretching from Bwizibwera through Mabira, via Kitookye to Rwenshanku in Bubaare sub-county. The project, which falls under the periodic maintenance program, is estimated to cost shs 104.5 million. The funding for the roadworks comes from the government’s Road Maintenance Grant, part of a one-billion-shilling allocation recently released to enhance road conditions in Mbarara District.
The launch ceremony took place at Kitookye trading center, presided over by RDC Mbarara, Turyabagyenyi Emmanuel Kateera. Attendees included the Chairperson of Mbarara District, Tabaro Didus Tumwesigye, District Engineer Bananuka William, and local leaders from Rwanyamahembe town council in Kashari South, Mbarara District.
During the ceremony, Turyabagyenyi urged communities along the road to develop attractive structures that could attract external investments. He emphasized the potential for residents to benefit economically by selling goods and services and marketing their produce in better markets, contributing to overall development.
Senior District Engineer Mbarara, Eng William Bananuka, clarified that the funds for the road came from a portion of the one billion shillings approved by parliament and provided by President Museveni. He encouraged those using the road to apply for jobs, with priority given to local residents.
Tabaro Didus, the Chairperson of Mbarara District, explained that the road project was financed by the district to support the abundant banana production in the area and improve communication. He also emphasized the importance of community attendance at launching ceremonies to stay informed about government initiatives and dispel rumors.
Tabaro further announced the Mbarara District Local Government’s plan to conduct parish community consultative gatherings (BARAZAs) in every parish. These gatherings aim to evaluate government initiatives and allow the public to voice their challenges, contributing to improved and quality service delivery.
