Mbarara district local government has achieved a vaccination rate of 93 percent, just shy of the targeted 95 percent, in the ongoing yellow fever vaccination campaign set to conclude on April 14, 2024. This achievement was announced by RDC Mbarara Turyabagyenyi Emmanuel Kateera following a comprehensive review and planning meeting at the district council hall Kamukuzi.

Turyabagyenyi attributed this success to effective teamwork and strong leadership exhibited by both political and technical authorities within Mbarara district local government. Among the lower local governments, Rubindi-Ruhumba town council emerged as the top performer with a vaccination rate of 112 percent, followed by Rubaya sub-county at 108 percent, and Kagongi sub-county at 102 percent. Bubaare sub-county recorded the lowest rate at 80 percent.

Kateera urged the Chief Administrative Officer to provide support to the district health team in further engaging political leaders and continuing public sensitization efforts to ensure full participation across the district.

Furthermore, the meeting recommended integrating an extension period into child health days.

This strategy would allow health workers to conduct outreach programs to vaccinate individuals who have not yet received the yellow fever vaccine, ensuring inclusivity and compliance with government directives.
