Three schools in Mayanga Sub-county, Mitooma District on Thursday received three-seater desks as a donation from the Mayanga Sub-county Local Government, as local leaders vow commitment to prioritize supporting education and school leaders cry out for more support.

This afternoon, the Mayanga Sub-county Local Government leadership used part of the UGX 15 million Discretionary Development Equalisation Grant (DDEG) funds they received from the Ugandan Local Government to donate three-seater desks to Mayanga Seed School S.S (30 desks), Rucururu Primary School (13 desks), and Kanganga Primary School, which received 12 desks.

Speaking with Boona Radio, some of the school headteachers who received the desks, led by the Mayanga Seed School S.S headteacher Mr. Sam Ainebyoona, expressed gratitude towards the sub-county for the donation and support. However, he expressed dissatisfaction, saying that due to the large number of students, the desks are still not enough, vowing to demand and purchase more.

Meanwhile, despite the insufficient desks at the school, he said that classrooms are also inadequate since student enrollment increases rapidly every term. He called for continued support and donations from well-wishers and the Ugandan central government.

The Mayanga Sub-county Speaker, Mr. Josephat Twijukye, said that after making continuous visits to important areas in the sub-county, they found these schools in poor condition, struggling with many challenges and having large enrollments with insufficient infrastructure, where learners were sitting many on each desk. However, he expressed that reports on the table confirm the shortage of sufficient classrooms in some schools, therefore calling on the government to intervene.

He added that they also donated desks to two other schools, Mitara and Makobe Primary Schools. Having prioritized supporting education as a sub-county, he expressed hope and interest in also supporting private schools struggling with large enrollments and inadequate infrastructure.

The Mayanga Sub-county LC3 Chairperson, Mr. Lawrence Kagwani, also confirmed that the desks donated to the schools are made of quality wood and are durable, each comfortably accommodating three learners. He added that despite the many challenges facing these schools, desks were prioritized since they had large enrollments without enough seating, forcing learners to sit uncomfortably.

Mr. Lawrence added that they had already served other schools by donating permanent toilets using the UGX 15 million annual Discretionary Development Equalisation Grant (DDEG) funds, such as Kaceeza Primary School and Makoomi Primary School, expressing a desire to also consider supporting Mayanga Primary School.
