Resident Judge Justice Tom Chemutai, at the Rukungiri High Court, pronounced a 60-year prison sentence on Thursday, December 13, 2023, for Karigye Yonah, also known as Mukiga. The 38-year-old from Kanungu District was convicted on October 25, 2021, for manslaughter in the case of 2-year-old Ahumuza Christine.
Ahumuza Christine, now 4 years old, is the daughter of Kiconco Rabbeca, a resident of Rwankoma Cell, Kebisoni Sub County, Rukungiri District. At the time of the incident, the family was residing in Kakinga Cell, Rwakirungura Parish, Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District, where Mukiga had been a casual laborer in the household of the late Nahurira Alex for a considerable period.
The prosecution established that on the morning of October 25, 2023, in Kakinga Cell, Rwakirungura Parish, Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District, Kiconco Rabbeca left her two daughters sleeping. Upon her return, she discovered that Ahumuza Christine was missing.
In her attempt to locate her daughter, Kiconco Rabbeca heard commotion near the late Nahurira Alex’s family. Upon investigation, they discovered blood, and Ahumuza Christine was found critically injured, wrapped in polythene bags in a banana plantation, with her private parts mutilated.
Karigye Yonah alias Mukiga was apprehended, and Ahumuza Christine was rushed to Nyakibale Hospital. She was later referred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where she spent over three months in critical condition. Although she has since recovered, she continues to face challenges due to the trauma inflicted on her private parts.
Kiconco Rabbeca mentioned that her daughter, Ahumuza Christine, has been recommended to seek further medical treatment in India.
Justice Tom Chemutai emphasized the lifelong trauma inflicted on the innocent girl by Karigye Yonah alias Mukiga and handed down a 60-year prison sentence for the heinous crime.
