Territorial police in Rukungiri District are investigating the death of 42-year-old Annet Arinaitwe, allegedly at the hands of her husband, Tumuramye Vanansio, aged 32, both residents of Kabasoni Cell, Nyakitabire Parish, Ruhinda Sub-county.
According to ASP Maate Elly, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, the incident occurred on April 26, 2025, at around 12:30 a.m. It is alleged that the couple had earlier been drinking at Omurusandasi Trading Centre on the evening of April 25. After returning home and having supper, Arinaitwe reportedly suggested they go back for more drinking, but Tumuramye refused, and they went to bed.
Later, Tumuramye allegedly woke up to find Arinaitwe missing. While searching for her, he met her along Katookye-Kyomera Road, returning home. A confrontation ensued after she allegedly replied arrogantly to his questioning, leading to a fight. Tumuramye is reported to have picked up a stone and hit Arinaitwe on the head, rendering her unconscious.
He then hired a boda boda rider to rush her to Burombe Health Centre III, where she was pronounced dead before admission. The suspect allegedly abandoned the body along Ruhinda-Rukungiri Road and fled.
Police at Ruhinda were alerted, visited and documented the scene, recorded statements from witnesses, and arrested the suspect. The body was taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre III mortuary for postmortem as investigations continue.
