A man in his 60s, identified as Zarura David, has been arrested in Kisoro District for alleged witchcraft activities in Kanaba Sub County.
The incident occurred on Saturday night when Zarura was reportedly found dancing on top of his deceased elder brother’s grave in Gisasa village, Kagezi Parish. Erastus Sabiti, the son of the deceased, apprehended Zarura and took him to the Kanaba Police Post.
Sabiti has urged the authorities to thoroughly investigate his uncle and uncover his motives, expressing concern for his family’s safety. He noted that while it was the first time he had witnessed such an act, his daughter had frequently been plagued by evil spirits.
Christopher Serugyendo, the LC1 Chairman of Gisasa, confirmed that he also found Zarura lying beside the grave. When the community learned about the incident, many residents were enraged and intended to harm Zarura. However, Serugyendo intervened to prevent this. Zarura’s sons and wife initially acted as sureties for his release, agreeing that the matter would be discussed the following morning, but they ultimately failed to appear.
Mugyema James, the LC2 Chairman of Kagezi Parish, expressed concern about the rising incidents of witchcraft in Kanaba Sub County. He highlighted the difficulty in addressing these practices due to the challenge of providing concrete evidence.
During police questioning, Zarura David denied the accusations, attributing his actions to being under the influence of alcohol.
