Male parents have been criticized for neglecting their responsibilities in supporting public schools and caring for learners, a situation that has negatively affected the education sector.

The criticism was delivered on Wednesday, 4th December 2025, by Turyahabwe Bosco, a Kampala-based businessman and an old student of Kashenyi Primary School in Ruhinda Sub-county, Rukungiri District, while officiating at the school’s Speech Day held on the school premises.

Bosco expressed dissatisfaction with male parents for evading key school responsibilities such as attending preparatory meetings, participating in school maintenance, and providing essential needs including welfare support, uniforms, and scholastic materials. He noted that such neglect has greatly affected the education system and called for a complete change in mindset among parents, especially men.

The Head Teacher of Kashenyi Primary School, Enock Ahebwe, appreciated the support rendered by some parents, the school management committee, and alumni. He emphasized the school’s priority of maintaining first-grade performance despite challenges such as low income levels among parents, pupil absenteeism, shortage of infrastructure, and limited collaboration, which continue to hinder smooth learning.

The Chairperson of the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA), John Magezi, acknowledged the improvement in teaching standards that has resulted in the school scooping a number of first grades. He called upon parents to strengthen their support for quality education at Kashenyi Primary School and to always demand accountability to achieve better results.

Meanwhile, Mzee Fred Ndyabangira, the former librarian of Kashenyi Secondary School, also expressed concern over the declining role of male parents in supporting education, saying that neglect by fathers has contributed to the deterioration of school standards.

Parents Joan Nampebwa and Asumputa Tumwebaze attributed the current barriers to quality education to increasing irresponsibility among some parents, urging all guardians to take education as a shared responsibility.
