Lawrence Kanyuka is the political spokesperson of the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels group following his appointment by the high command.
The M23 president, Bertrand Bisimwa communicated the development in a brief statement issued yesterday , saying the appointment takes immediate effect.
According to Bisimwa, Kanyuka’s appointment is meant to ensure that M23’s communication is effective.
Bisimwa also says that Major Willy Ngoma, who has been the overall spokesperson of the rebels will remain acting as the military spokesperson.
Kanyuka’s appointment comes at a time when M23 rebels, who resumed fighting with government troops have maintained a firm grip on the Uganda-DR Congo border of Bunagana and neighboring since June 13.
Kanyuka worked as the deputy spokesperson of the M23 rebels in 2013 before the group was defeated and surrendered to Uganda.
Kanyuka worked as a member of the Union for the Congolese Nation (UNC), a political party in DR Congo before he was expelled in early 2013 after joining the rebels.
