On November 24th, 2023, over 203 patients with non-communicable diseases received complimentary healthcare services organized by the Lions Club of Rukungiri District 411B in collaboration with Buhunga My Heritage. The event took place at Buhunga Health Center 4 in Rukungiri District, with a focus on screening for diabetes, blood pressure, and eye conditions, along with providing free health services to the patients.

Dr. Aston Tumuhimbise, a member of the Lions Club of Rukungiri and a healthcare professional at Karoli Lwanga Nyakibale Hospital, led a team of health workers during the one-day health camp. Dr. Tumuhimbise highlighted that more than 60% of the attendees were found to have diseases, emphasizing the lack of awareness and improper medication adherence among patients. He encouraged people to be proactive in managing non-communicable diseases through regular screenings, physical exercises, and avoiding habits like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

One participant, 62-year-old Kamugisha Zefurino, a retired disabled soldier without legs from Rwabwingi B cell, Buhunga Parish, Buhunga Sub County, expressed disappointment at testing positive for diabetes and high blood pressure. He urged others to prioritize regular testing, emphasizing that many individuals may be sick without realizing it.

Tumushabe Alex, a Lion and Chairperson of Buhunga My Heritage, explained that their collaboration with the Lions Club aimed to raise awareness of non-communicable diseases in their community. He expressed the desire to attract more health camps to enhance the overall well-being of the local residents.

Santrina Nahwera, the Rukungiri District Vice Chairperson LC5 and a member of Buhunga My Heritage, commended the efforts of the Lions Club of Rukungiri and encouraged people to follow health workers’ instructions for a longer and healthier life.

Byarugaba Conerius, the President of the Lions Club of Rukungiri, praised the Rukungiri District Health Department for allowing them to complement government healthcare services. He expressed the club’s determination to bring specialists to the area and called for support from the community and donors. Conerius highlighted that the Lions Club had donated diabetes screening equipment to Buhunga Health Center 4 as part of their ongoing efforts to contribute to the improvement of healthcare services in the region.
