The incident occurred at approximately 2 PM on Sunday, 20th October 2024, at Mengo Church of Uganda in Mengo Parish, Nshanjare Town Council, Rubanda District.

According to Ven. Earnest Nkwasibwe, the Archdeacon of Muko Archdeaconry, where the church is located, lightning struck Mengo Church of Uganda after the Sunday service, leaving three women injured. The victims have been identified as Charity Murungi (35), Brenda Nyiramutuzo (33), and Macklean Tumusingize (30), all residents of Mengo Village, in Mengo Ward, Nshanjare Town Council.

Ven. Nkwasibwe urged the leadership of Rubanda District to equip worship centers and nearby schools with lightning conductors to prevent similar incidents.

Following the incident, Rubanda West Member of Parliament hopeful Mucunguzi Innocent Rwakiiseta extended support to the affected families, providing them with relief items such as matooke, rice, salt, and soap to assist them during these challenging times.

Rwakiiseta also advised the public to observe lightning safety precautions, including staying indoors when thunder roars, avoiding electronic devices during storms, and wearing rubber boots, especially during the rainy season.
