Leaders in Kisoro District have paid tribute to the late Minister Sarah Mateke Nyirabasitsi, remembering her as a devoted politician and a driving force behind the district’s development. Nyirabasitsi, who served as Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament and Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs, passed away on Saturday at the age of 50.
Kisoro District Chairman Abel Bizimana described her as an exceptional leader, noting that the nation has lost a true patriot and development champion who will be difficult to replace.
Kisoro District Speaker Amos Hakizimana echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that Nyirabasitsi played a crucial role in linking Kisoro to the central government. He remarked that her death marks a significant setback for the district, especially in her capacity as a lobbyist.
Southern Division District Councillor James Agaba also honored her memory, recalling her advocacy for education. Agaba, a beneficiary of her scholarship program at Metropolitan International University, said he was able to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Tourism thanks to her support.
Nicholas Kaziro, Academic Registrar at Metropolitan International University, praised Nyirabasitsi for her selflessness, describing her as a mentor, motivator, and mother figure. He added that her passing is a great loss to the university’s development.
Kisoro Resident District commissioner Hajji Badru Ssebyala highlighted Nyirabasitsi’s unwavering dedication to serving her country, emphasizing her commitment to the people of Kisoro.
