Reverend Elias Niwagaba, the curate of Emmanuel Cathedral in North Kigezi Diocese, has called on men to resume their rightful duties within their families and return to church. Speaking during a sermon at St. Mark Maya Church of Uganda while celebrating St. Peter’s Day, Reverend Elias highlighted the declining influence of men in their households, urging them to reconcile with their families and make family welfare their top priority.

“Men are no longer regarded as heads of their families because they have neglected their responsibilities, leaving them to their wives. It’s time for men to take back their roles as both administrative and spiritual heads of their homes,” Reverend Elias said. He emphasized the importance of fatherly love, guidance, and leadership through love and understanding, shunning hatred, and fostering family forgiveness. He also urged men to provide basic needs, such as food and school fees, to earn the respect of their wives and children.

Reverend Elias further encouraged men to draw near to God for spiritual strength to overcome challenges and triumph in their roles as family heads.

In attendance was Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahirwa, Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality, who praised the congregation for inviting him to join the St. Peter’s Day celebrations. Hon. Rutahirwa echoed Reverend Elias’ message as the guest of honor, urging men to take care of their health and remain committed to their families and churches. He pointed out that neglecting these responsibilities leads to the breakdown of family units.

“Men must not abandon their homes and churches. Staying active in faith and family is crucial to successful and stable households,” Hon. Rutahirwa stated.

Hon. Rutahirwa also delivered good news to the congregation, announcing that Kitimba Primary School, a church-founded school, has been officially granted government-aided status after years of petitioning. He urged parents to take advantage of this opportunity by enrolling their children and promised to ensure that the school is equipped with sufficient teachers and resources.

In addition, George Bugayi and Abel Byamugisha of the Father’s Union expressed their joy in celebrating St. Peter’s Day and addressed the concerning absence of men in the church. They emphasized that this absence deprives young boys of the necessary spiritual guidance, attributing some of the societal challenges, such as family conflicts, to men spending excessive time in bars.

The Father’s Union called for men to repent and return to Christ, reaffirming the critical role men play as leaders in both their homes and communities.
